Outdoor in the Dolomites. Trekking poles: fixed - foldable or telescopic ?

A few years ago, the first “pioneers” of trekking poles were often the subject of some ridicule.

We were all used to associating this type of equipment solely with skiing.

Indeed, it was a bit strange to encounter these funny people on the trails, fumbling with their poles.

We all thought, in the end, they would trip and fall…

Today, however, they are the ones laughing, happy to have advanced the safety and comfort of walking in general, and mountain hiking in particular.

Trekking poles have become so successful that companies specializing in mountain equipment have released three versions:

  • Fixed

  • Foldable

  • Telescopic

Fixed poles might be inconvenient as they need to be chosen in-store with great care to ensure they are ergonomic and effective for a frictionless and proper walking experience. Their advantage, being made in one piece, is that they have no critical points of failure and can be used even in extreme conditions without breaking or collapsing. This includes carbon fiber poles.

Foldable poles are a good alternative for those who think they won’t always use poles, but only in more “complicated” situations. They are generally lighter than fixed poles and can be easily stored in a backpack, taking up very little space.

Telescopic poles are perfect for those who don’t have the time or desire to find the perfect size and therefore select the right fixed poles. They don’t mind the weight (these poles are the heaviest of the three, being made with tubes that slide into each other) and want a compact yet robust tool.

Poles are always used in pairs!

Their function is to maintain proper balance both uphill and downhill.

They also help to relieve some of the strain on the lower limbs, which will be greatly appreciated by those with joint problems, especially in the knees.

Happy hiking and have fun in Selva di Cadore in our wonderful Eastern Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site!
